The actions of Mr.Givens is that he writes his own obituary. The attitude of Mr.Givens is that he is very loyal and starves love because he wrote that obituary because he wanted his wife to see that he needs attention. He also was very nervous throughout the entire short story.Next, the appearance of Mr.Givens is that he is an older man who was short, doughy, and rounded off. The burst vessels in his cheeks gave him a merry look. Furthermore, the words of Mr.Givens is that he keeps saying that it wasnt anyone he knew because he is friends with everyone. But he failed to tell him that it was actually himself who wrote the obituary. "We've had our problems but i can guarentee you it wasnt her" ( his wife).

In the short story Mortals by Tobias Wolff, Mr.Givens displays many character traits. Mr.Givens appearance was “short, doughy, and rounded off”. Mr.Givens was short and heavy. “He gave me a hard look and gripped the salt and pepper shakers like a machine gunner about to let off a burst”. Mr.Givens was getting angry when he realized that the editor didn’t realize who he was. “Loyalty is a very clear pattern in my life”. Mr.Givens hates not getting the whole truth out of someone. Mr.Givens displays many character traits in this short story.

Tobias Wolff shows a lot of characterization towards his character, Mr.Givens in the short story, Mortals. "It was an impression he created by hunching his shoulders and thrusting his neck forward like a turtle" shows that Mr.Givens was nervous at the time. "His eyes were soft, restless" makes me feel like something his wrong. Maybe he feels unnoticed. "His hands were pale and sinewt" makes me feel like hes nervous about something, about the truth comming out that he feels unnnoticed in the world. Tobias Wolff did and excellent job at showing Mr.Givens appearance and actions.

Tobias Wolff uses Mr. Givens' appearance, actions, words, and attitude to show his characterization. Wolff writes, that "the man was short, doughy, rounded off." Here he is explaining his outward physical appearance, telling us that he is short and fat. this gives us a visual picture of the character. Wolff also writes, "he gave me a hard look and gripped the salt shakers like a machine gunner about to let off a burst." Wolff uses this simile to show, through his actions, that Givens' is angry.

Tobias used many examples of a good character in his short story "Mortals". He had a very vivid sense of word choice in one part of the story, ie:"He kept his mouth covered with one hand while he worked the toothpick with the other." He could show you how the character was feeling without telling you. Another example of good character in the story is when the characters use actions.

Tobias Wolff the author of “Morals” used great affect of making Mr. Givens real. For example, “He wasn’t as short as I’d first thought. Tabias Wolfe wrote the story Motals which holds many character traits for the main character Mr. Givens. One example would be his apprearence. His appearance was described as short, doughly, rounded off, and had blood vessels in his cheek that made him look happy. in my opinion this decription tells me that the character of Mr. Givens is not a young and is pretending to be fairly angry. Another character trait is the action he has in the restaurant.

The story “Mortals” utilitizes the first stage of establishing character traits in a story in several ways. For starts, Tobias Wolff gives Mr. Givens an appearance that just stands out like no other. “It was an impression he created by hunching his shoulders and thrusting his neck forward like a turtle. His eyes were soft, restless. He used them like peasant, in swift measuring glances with his face averted.”(Wolff 4) This shows the character is kind of shy and nervous because when I think of a turtle I see one hiding in its shell because it is afraid. The is usually the case when you come across a turtle. Also, Wolff gives Givens some pretty strong actions. “He gave me a hard look and gripped the salt and pepper shakers like a machine gunner about to let off a burst.”(Wolff 11) Givens is most likely angry.

In the short story Mortals by Tobias Wolff, character traits are shown very clearly for Mr. Givens and the narrator. Mr. Givens was “short, doughy, and rounded of.” This depicts a vivid picture of the man’s appearance. “It was an impression he created by hunching his shoulders and thrusting his neck forward like a turtle,” shows that Mr. Givens wasn’t a very confident man. This is part of his attitude. An example of words is, “he didn’t answer. He was watching me.” Through his lack of words, it shows how nervous he is. It gives the impression that maybe he is lying. The final example which is of Mr. Givens actions is, “he gave me a hard look and gripped the salt and pepper shakers like a machine gunner about to let off a burst.” This shows the anger arising inside of Mr. Givens, his frustration.

Mortal by Tobias Wolff develops great character traits when it comes to Mr. Givens. The appearance was described as “thrusting his neck like a turtle”. What Tobias is saying is that Mr. Givens looks like a turtle. Another appearance quote is ´he stuck his head forward in that turtlish way”. Again Tobias is saying how Mr. Givens resembles a turtle. Mr. Givens actions also are characterized in this quote “he started fooling with the salt and pepper shakers”. This action by Mr. Givens shows his nervousness. Another quote is “he gripped the salt and pepper shakers”. Tobias Wolff is saying that Mr. Givens is getting angry. Tobias Wolff does a wonderful job characterizing Mr. Givens.

Tobias Wolff is amazing at creating characters and he can really paint a crystal clear image in your head. He said, “The man was short, doughy, rounded off. The burst vessels in his cheeks gave him a merry look until he smiled.”. This clearly shows you and describes to you that the character is overweight; it paints that picture in your mind.

This short story really shows the character traits of the characters. Wolf shows appearance by saying, "The burst vessels in his cheeks gave him a merry look until he smiled." This really gives you a good idea about what somebody looks like. Also, he shows the characters action by saying, "It was an impression he made by hunching his shoulders and thrusting his neck forward like a turtle." This really explains what somebody does when they are scared. Finally, Wolff really shows that Givens was nervous by stating, "He gave me a hard look and gripped the salt and pepper shakers like a machine gunner about to let off a burst." This really shows that he was nervous and angry because at first he was just playing around with them but now he is gripping them hard. In conclusion, Wolff really shows the character traits of the characters without telling you but showing you.

Mr. Givens is a prime example of how Tobias Wolff emphasizes the importance of characterization. The actions portrayed by Givens was that he wrote his own obituary. "Admit it... Then he said, almostly inaudibly, Yes. Just that one word." He wrote his own obituary because he craved attention from his wife.

Tobias Wolff is excellent author in his story “Mortals” when it comes to characterization with Mr. Givens. He is especially descriptive when it comes to Mr. Givens appearance. “The burst vessels in his cheeks gave him a merry look until he smiled” (Wolff 3). After reading this I could envision seeing a little old man with blue veins popping out of his cheeks. Another descriptive way Wolff uses characterization through their appearance is when he said “It was an impression he created by hunching his shoulders and thrusting his neck forward like a turtle” (Wolff 4). It’s saying that Mr. Givens is scared so like a turtle he is hunching over and trying to hide from his troubles, and like a turtle they would duck their head down and hide in there shells. Lastly Tobias is descriptive when it comes to Mr. Givens actions when he states “He leaned forward and started fooling with the salt and pepper shakers, tapping them together and sliding them around like partners in square dancing” (Wolff 10). This quote says that he is nervous, and he is fiddling around. Tobias Wolff is excellent author in his story “Mortals” when it comes to characterization with Mr. Givens.

In the short story, "Mortals," Tobias Wolff uses great characterization in terms of Mr. Givens. He's very descriptive in the characters that he creates; almost like they're people that he really knows. Wolff really seems to know how to get inside your mind, kindof like he's making you know & see the people in his stories as he does. In the beginning, he chooses very powerful word choices when describing Mrs. Givens. "..The woman in a chair, bony-faced and vigilant, holding the straps of her bag with both hands. Her suit was the same bluish gray as her hair. There weas something soldierly about her," (Wolff 3). I get the hint that she's kindof high class, and very thin.

In the short story “Mortals” by Tobias, the main character displays different tones. He wants to keep his job although he knows he does not do well, nor does it right. What it explains about the character is that he needs money, but doesn’t really want to earn it. When he is told he is fired, he appears to be not really effected by it. It shows that he may have gone through many jobs or is at least used to losing jobs. He is determined to get Mr. Givens to tell the truth that he sent in the obituary, his own obituary. He goes as far as to grab Mr. Givens arm, and that tells me that he will do whatever it takes to find out whatever he wants to know. It also shows that he is a little unpredictable.

The way that Tobias Wolff shows characteristic detail, and emphasizing the actions, and story telling of the characters. First to start off, the special quotes that he used “he gave me a hard look and gripped the salt and pepper shakers like a machine gunner about to let off a burst” that shows that the character is very angry and is taking out pressure on 2 objects that cannot be affected by force. Also the character is showing that his job is getting to him by him saying that he cannot remember anybody that he writes about in the obituaries because all of the obituaries that he writes kind of blur together. Also, another quote that is used is, “smooth as silk”. By saying that it is showing that everything is gong according to plan, and flawless. Tobias Wolff is an author that concludes his stories by using details that make the reader feel the emotions that the character is feeling.

"Mortals" is an excellent short story when it comes to Character Appearance, Actions, and Personal thoughts. Tobias Wolff does a great job when introducing the main character Mr. Givens. "The man was short, doughy, rounded off. The burst vessels in his cheeks gave him a merry look until he smiled." (Wolff 3.) After reading this description, I could actually picture a little round man with big cheeks; merry almost like a Grandpa. Also the way Tobias Wolff really expands on emotions by creating actions to explain them better. “He leaned forward and started fooling with the salt and pepper shakers, tapping them together and sliding them around like partners in a square dance.” (Wolff 10.) This tells me that Mr. Givens is nervous. People always fiddle around with stuff and can’t keep still when they are nervous. Last the way Wolff gets you inside the characters inner thoughts, this can also tell you a lot about the character. I’d given up a lot for my writing, and it wasn’t giving me anything back-not respectability, nor money, nor love. So when this job came up I took it. I hated it and did it badly, but I meant to keep it. This tells me the narrator is kind of a slacker and gets his job done to get it done, not to be proud of his work. This also tells me he does not take his job seriously. When it comes to Character Appearance, Actions, and Personal thoughts Tobias Wolff does an excellent job in characterization.

Tobias Wolff potrays excellent characterization in his short story "Mortals". He introduces the main character early, letting you get a feel for what kind of traits he carries. The narrators boss informs him of a horendous mistake he had made, "Then he read aloud, from that mornings paper, the obituary i had writter announcing Mr. Givens death"(Wolff3). Obviously, the narrator is being seen as worthless when it comes to his job. Or, perhaps, that he doesn't do his job correctly, which wouldnt be a complete lie. another way the narrator may seem worthless to his boss would be later on during the confrontation. the narrators response, "I hadnt seen the point in asking their familes if they were really dead, or calling

In the short story "Mortals", Tobias Wolff uses great characterization for Mr. Givens. "The man was short, doughy rounded off.The burst vessels in his cheeks gave him a merry look until he smiled." To me this is saying that Mr. Givens is a short and chubby man who you can tell is very nice deep down inside.

Tobias Wolff does an excellent job in his short story, Mortal, of creating well rounded characters that keep the readers attention. Mr. Givens is a very interesting character in terms of his dialogue. He is short at times and also sometimes unclear when he speaks. Givens gave a lot of one word answers often putting the weight of the conversation on the writers shoulders

In the short story "Mortals", Tobias Wolff really knows how to describe his characters with complex appereances. He shows Mr. Givens appearance by saying, "The burst vessels in his cheeks have him a mery look untill he smiled" (Wolff 3). Mr. Givens seems to be a well rounded individual yet a bit selfcentered. He wrote his own obituary because he was in need of attention from his wife.

The Golden Rule of characterization has been glorified when it comes to the short story by Tobias Wolff called "Mortals." In the story an editor had written and published a false obituary called in by none other than the dead man! With only 4 characters in the story, 2 round and other flat he characterized the characters actions, appearance, and attitude incredibly!

In the short story “Mortals” by Tobias Wolff the author demonstrates a clean cut way of the appearances of his characters. He states that Mr. Givens was not as short as he thought. “It was an impression he created by hunching his shoulders and thrusting his neck forward like a turtle,” (Wolff 4). Immediately this created an imagine in my mind of a older man with a curved back and popping his head out when he was interested. Also, Wolff states, “His eyes were soft, restless. He used them like a peasant, in swift measuring glances with his face averted,” (Wolff 4). This portrays to me that he was not making eye contact with the narrator. Perhaps he was nervous to be in conversation with him. Another detail of the characters appearance was when the narrator stated, “The burst vessels in his cheeks gave him a merry look until he smiled,” (Wolff 3). The burst vessels could portray stress in his life. Tobias Wolff does a excellent way of portraying the appearance of his characters.

If you have ever seen any war movie, when someone grabs a machine gun they usually are mad and mean business. Givens grabs them like that to show hes angry at the things the narrator is saying. As you can see Wolff uses great discription to form a character as good as Givens.

Then she starts clenching them tightly with his fists which shows emotion of anger or nervousness, possibly both. All that Mr. Givens wanted was attention from his wife, so he wrote his on obituary which i think is selfish.

Actions and words are key points to first stage character like the narrator. The narrator for example asks questions to Mr. Givens about him calling in his own obituary which stirs emotions up. Also actions are going nuts. Watching Mr. Givens playing with salt and pepper shakers the narrator can interpret that Mr. Givens knows something. What Mr. Givens also seems nervous so it kind of shows that Mr. Givens himself is the man that called in his own death! Words that the narrator used to make Mr. Givens unstable are when asking Mr. Givens why he did call in the obit and Mr. Givens replying with “Why would I do that?” And then the narrator shots back “You tell me.” So in conclusion Tobias Wolff uses that narrators’ action and words to show his characterization in the short story Mortal.

Givens is a well built character that I can picture in my mind and I feel like I actually know him. Givens reminds me of a turtle just retreating to his shell every time a problem comes up. "he kept walking, head struck foward in that turtlish way, navigating the crowd." He doesnt address the problem he pulls a stunts like calling in his own obit. He doesnt talk to people enough about his problems he acts like they will just blow over, over night. Givens thinks that he deserves more credit in his life than he receives. This angers him because he says "with me its loyalty" after asking the narrator what hes proud of.

Tobias wolff uses great character traits in his short stories by using appearance, actions, and words. he created the image of a turtle by mr. Givens hunching his shoulders, and thrusting his neck.
when Mr. Givens was playing with the salt shakers he was ready throw whem at the narrator when he lamed him for calling in his death. "like a machine gun he was ready to fire at me"
Tobias Wolff creats such good shot stories by using character traits like appearance, actins, and words.

One of the better actions is when Givens death gips the salt and trys not to flip out. That there is showing that he is mad with out telling you. Given's attitude is important in this short story. The most important person in his life is his wife. His favorite activity is his job and other people anger him. His biggest regret is making obituarys for people who didn't even pass away. Givens thinks a lot about what other people think. Other people don't think that he is being rude but the person that he is writing on the obit. does. Ths short story is really good and it is a great example of character traits.

Mr. Givens fakes his own death by submitting a fake obituary. He looked like a turtle by hunching his shoulders and thrusting his neck forward. He is trying to hide because he is scared. He knows he submitted the obituary so he is trying to hide in his shell like a turtle. His hands were pale and sinewy while he was at lunch with the metro editor. Givens actions were all the metro editor needed to know that Givens was the one who posted the fake obituary. Givens attitude also changed when the metro editor was asking Givens questions about who might have done this to him. Givens finally did admit to calling in the obituary. Anger emerged from others that wanted to break his neck. The editor said, “If something happened to you right now, your obituary would be sold news. Then I could get my job back.”

To explain, “he gave me a hard look and gripped the salt and pepper shakers like a machine gunner about to let off a burst.”I can feel his anger in the actions that he is doing. Lastly the word Mr. Givens uses takes the cake. “With me it’s loyalty. Loyalty is vary clear pattern in my life. You would’ve noticed that if you’d had your eyes open”. The words that he uses makes the reader see who Mr. Givens is.

Also, another great description Wolff wrote was, “It was an impression he created by hunching his shoulders and thrusting his neck forward like a turtle.” That quote is an amazing description and also a great simile. You can just picture the character sucking his head in as he his afraid as a turtle does. Another quote, “He kept his mouth covered with one hand while he worked the toothpick with the other.” You can honestly see a man just working the toothpick with his fingers, just going back and forth with it.

In the short story “Mortals” by Tobias Wolff there is a lot that is going on but the thing that sticks out the most is the characterization. I could picture everything that is going on in the story. It felt like I was basically in the story with Mr. Givens. The first example is when Mr. Givens wrote his own obituary. Cleary he is trying to relay the message to his wife that he isn’t getting the attention that he wants from her and wants her to realize what it would be like without him. The second thing that shows great characterization is when he grabs the salt and pepper shakers and acts like he is a machine gunner acting like he is about to let a burst off. This is showing that he wants to be a well know person somewhat like a celebrity but doesn’t have the big name that’s needed to be noticed. The third is when Mr. givens says “that he is a survivor” he is saying that he has survived the 42 years in his life with being a husband working the same job and not giving up when the going gets tough.
